Born to be Idiots

Nutcase 1

I read with a great deal of interest (as if) about the bad boys behind the counters at Sim Lim Square. If you are a foreigner or a local who has been living in Mars, let me explain to you.

Sim Lim Square is a place specialized in IT products and gadgets. You can get your computer hardware, software, games, digicam, mp3 and everything else in the mall. So it’s like a one-stop place for all your IT needs. Funan The IT Mall is its rival.

And so, this Filipino guy was rounded up by the guys at one of the shops at Sim Lim Square. He claimed that he was about to buy the PSP when the guy behind the couter jacked the price up at the last minute. There was a heated argument and he got slapped when he tried to take a picture of the store.

The last thing you’d want to do is take a picture of a store or a person whom you are not happy of, what more in a heated argument. Instead, jot down the name, unit number of the store and the salesman’s name if you know, and let the authorities handle the rest.

“I never thought this kind of blatant scam and violence would exist in this wonderful country. I still think it’s a great place to be in, I just know now that it’s not exempt from these kind of events” - The beaten up man

This one irrtates the crap out of me. I’m sorry to disappoint you but this country like any other country, isn’t ideal. So, us locals, we’re not angels. I’m getting tired of reading and listening to stuff like,”Oh, Singapore is a very safe country. I can walk out at 4am to get my food at the hawker centre and etc”. You’re inviting trouble if you’re a guy or a girl, going out in the wee hours of the morning. Because there were cases of girls getting raped late and guys getting beaten late at night in public.

So, don’t make assumptions and dreamy ideas that the people of this peaceful and safe country are law-abiding citizens. You’ll soon be sorry if you think that way.

Nutcase 2

I got the sms a couple of hours before reading that article. How coincidental. It’s from “Petronas”. In case you can’t see,”Congratulation!!! Your SimCard get $7000 from Petronas. For more information, please call PETRONAS centre : 6281399293555 www.petronas.com”.

The levels we humans stoop to just to earn that extra cash, is a disgrace.

Nutcase 3

Some sections of the media and athletes have been bad-mouthing the Chinese, claiming they got the home advantage by pressuring the judges into giving them more favourable scores. Some idiots went as far as blaming the home crowd for making too much noise and yadayada. The Most Idiotic Complaints award goes to the americans.

China’s team of gymnasts were rock solid, no doubt they deserved their victory. However, someone claimed Alicia Sacramone was made to wait twice before doing her routine, a disruption to concentration and ultimately, led to her slipping off the bar. The inability to accept defeat gracefully has diminished whatever respect the world has of these american athletes, in particular the gymnasts.

Shawn Johnson consoling Alicia Sacramone

Americans won respect because their finest competitor, Shawn Johnson, impressed in both her routines and her behaviour. The girl has grace, in every way.

As Sacramone sat in a chair despondent, Johnson finished her last routine on the floor and went to her teammate. She made space on the same chair linked her arm deliberately in Sacramone’s and put her chin gently on her teammate’s shoulder in empathy.

Johnson is 16, Sacramone is 20. Make no mistake, it was undoubtedly the best move of the night. - The Straits Times

Very well said.

There were other “adults turned kids” spats as well, such as the beach volleyball, Russia vs Georgia. And that american shooter incident too. But I’m not gonna go into all that.

In the face of worldwide media, the individual and team’s image is important. it’s is imperative that you control your mouth, especially when you lose. One bad move or even worse, a few bad moves like the americans, can make you look like a complete villain.
